Nursing Resume Guide: RN, CNA & Clinical Roles (2026)
How to write a nursing resume that leads with licensure, certifications, and patient outcomes — formatted for hospital ATS and recruiter searches.

Nursing resumes have one job: make credentials and clinical impact impossible to miss. Hospital ATS filters often search license numbers, unit types, and certification acronyms before a nurse recruiter reads the rest.
Put licensure and certifications first
For RNs: state license, compact status if applicable, BLS/ACLS, specialty certs (CCRN, etc.). For CNAs: certification, clinical settings (LTC, acute, rehab), and BLS.
Don't bury these at the bottom — many systems weight top-of-resume fields heavily.
Quantify patient care where you can
Safe metrics include:
- Patient load / nurse-to-patient ratios supported
- Quality indicators (falls prevention, infection control initiatives)
- Training or precepting headcount
- Unit throughput or discharge planning improvements
Avoid protected health information — stay aggregate and compliant.
Match unit and specialty keywords
Med-surg, ICU, ED, oncology — use the exact unit language from the posting. If the job says "step-down," don't only say "progressive care" without the synonym somewhere natural.
Browse registered nurse, CNA, and medical assistant examples for structure by role.
Keep layout clinical and clean
Healthcare employers still use strict parsers. Single column, standard headings, no icons for skills. Export a clean PDF unless HR requests Word.
New grads
Lead with clinical rotations like experience: unit, hours, skills, preceptor feedback if strong. Include GPA if 3.5+ and relevant honors.
