Internship Resume Guide: Land Your First Internship (2026)

One page, projects and campus work as experience, and keywords that help internship postings find you in ATS — even with no full-time jobs yet.

  • internship
  • resume
  • students

Internship recruiters know you won't have a decade of jobs — they look for initiative, relevant skills, and evidence you can learn fast. Your resume should make that obvious in one page.

One page is the default

Unless you have multiple substantial internships, keep it to one page. Prioritize the last 2–3 years.

Experience isn't only jobs

Include:

  • Internships and co-ops (best)
  • Part-time work with transferable skills
  • Research, capstone, or lab roles
  • Leadership in clubs, hackathons, case competitions
  • Freelance or volunteer projects with deliverables

Frame each like a job: title, org, dates, 2–3 bullets with metrics.

See marketing intern and college student examples.

Projects section for technical roles

Link GitHub or a live demo. List stack, your role, and one outcome ("cut build time 40%," "500 weekly active users").

Education carries weight

Degree, school, expected graduation, GPA if 3.5+, relevant coursework, honors. For STEM, list languages and tools you're comfortable whiteboarding.

Keywords from the posting

Internship listings still run through ATS. Pull tools and responsibilities from the description into skills and bullets — "social analytics," "Python," "customer discovery."

Avoid these

  • High school activities once you're in college (unless highly relevant)
  • Generic objective paragraphs
  • Unprofessional email addresses
  • Dense paragraphs instead of bullets

Apply with a tailored copy

Use Wizume to maintain a master resume, then tailor or duplicate per posting. Free resume builder tier is enough for many students applying to a handful of roles; run the resume checker before each submission.
