What an ATS Score Is Not

An ATS score is a keyword and formatting preview for this job — not a named-ATS pass, not a recruiter, and not an interview.

  • ats
  • resume
  • job-search

You paste a resume and a job. A number shows up. 72. 84. 41.

That number is a keyword and formatting preview against this posting. It is not a hiring decision.

Run the free resume checker to see the gap. It is a guest keyword-match preview — not a named-ATS simulation, and not a Workday / Greenhouse / Taleo certification.

If you treat the score as a pass from “the ATS,” you will either panic over the wrong gaps or stop editing once the number looks high. Use it to find this job’s language. Then tailor a copy of your master resume before you apply.

UK readers: same idea if you say CV. Same document.

It is not a named applicant tracking system

Applicant tracking systems store your file, parse text into fields, and let recruiters search. They are not one vendor with one secret test. Employer setups differ.

A checker that names ATS vendors is doing a different job than a checker that scores this job description. Wizume’s ATS resume builder scores JD-weighted keywords and formatting. We do not claim we are certified for Workday, Greenhouse, or Taleo. We do not claim Workday at all. Lever and Greenhouse notes from our own sample uploads are indicative only.

For how parsers actually read a file, see how to pass an ATS. For pulling terms from a posting, see ATS resume keywords.

It is not the same as the guest preview

Two tools. Two runs.

The guest checker on /resume-checker needs no account. Paste resume text and a job. It scores keyword overlap and simple formatting (length, dates, headings, table-like columns). It does not call OpenAI. It does not consume a scan credit.

The signed-in builder score is opt-in. It adds skills match, experience relevance, and one-click keyword/format fixes. We do not fire that run until you ask. Guest preview ≠ paid ATS score.

(A later post will go deeper on free check vs JD-weighted score. This one is about what the number is not.)

It is not a recruiter

A high score means the pasted text overlaps this job and the layout looks parser-safe. It does not mean a person will read you next.

Recruiter view in Wizume is a heuristic skim overlay. It is not a real recruiter. It is not an ATS parse.

It also does not mean an employer’s form will auto-fill from your PDF. In August 2026 sample uploads, Greenhouse accepted the file and the candidate form did not autofill. Results are indicative — employer configurations differ.

It is not an interview

No tool can guarantee interviews. A 90 is not a pass from a named system. A 41 is not a verdict on your career.

A low score usually means this posting uses different words than your master resume, or the file is hard to parse (multi-column layouts, text boxes, skill bars). Fix the copy for this job. Keep the master. Twelve parser-safe, single-column templates — not a design catalog.

Multi-column layouts, text boxes, and skill bars often drop sections. That is a layout problem, not a score problem.

What to do with the number

  1. Check this posting, not last year’s generic file.
  2. Map missing terms onto work you actually did. Do not stuff a keyword you cannot defend in an interview.
  3. Fix format before you chase the last five points. Parsers never see keywords they cannot read.
  4. Tailor a copy. Do not overwrite the master with this week’s JD.
  5. Write the cover letter from the same posting. Track that you sent it.

Wizume’s Chrome extension clips this tab’s job listing so you are not retyping. It does not autofill employer forms. It does not read your LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn import is a user-exported PDF — no scrape, no write-back.

Paste the job. Tailor a copy. Export a parser-safe file. Send it.

Check this job — then build the tailored copy in the ATS resume builder.

FAQ

Does a high ATS score mean I will pass the ATS?

No. Employer configurations differ. A high JD-weighted score means this posting’s language and a parser-safe layout are in better shape. It is not a pass from a named system.

Is the free checker the same as the builder score?

No. The guest checker is a keyword-match preview and never calls OpenAI. The signed-in score is a separate, opt-in JD-weighted run.

Can a score guarantee interviews?

No.
