Fifteen years of work does not require fifteen years of bullets. Most mid-career applications still want a tight one-page resume — readable by a human in seconds and parseable by software that expects a simple layout.
This is not the same question as "is one page or two OK?" (that lives at how long should a resume be). This post is about how to compress a long career onto one page without multi-column design tricks that look polished and then fail a parse.
Start with a parser-safe resume template. UK readers: same product if you say CV.
Why one page still wins for many roles
Hiring teams skim. A second page is fine when the posting or seniority truly needs depth. For a large share of individual-contributor and mid-level roles, one page with recent, relevant proof beats a archive of every title you have held.
The trap: people with long careers reach for dense two-column Canva-style layouts to "fit more." Columns, text boxes, and sidebars often look fine on screen and then drop or reorder text when a parser reads the PDF. Prefer a single-column, parser-safe layout. Wizume ships twelve templates total — not hundreds. Free starts with three (Modern, Classic, Simple); Pro unlocks all twelve. See resume templates.
What to keep (and what to cut)
Keep near the top
- Contact + a short summary aimed at this kind of role (not a life essay).
- The last 10–12 years of roles that prove the next job, with quantified bullets where you can.
- Skills that match the posting — not every tool you have ever opened.
- Education and credentials that still matter for the target role.
Cut or collapse
- Early-career jobs that do not support the next step (one line each, or drop).
- Soft skills with no proof ("team player," "results-oriented").
- Duplicate bullets across three similar roles — merge the pattern once.
- Full address blocks, headshots, and graphics that waste vertical space and hurt parse.
You are editing for the job you want next, not archiving your LinkedIn.
Compression tactics that still read as senior
- Lead with recent depth. Give the current and prior role real bullets. Older roles can be title + dates + one line.
- One idea per bullet. Action + scope + result. Cut the setup story.
- Reuse language from the posting when it is honest — then score keyword and formatting fit against that JD. That score is a JD-weighted preview, not a named-ATS certification. See what an ATS score is not.
- Master vs tailored copy. Keep a fuller master if you need it; ship a one-page tailored copy per posting. The master stays. Details: master resume vs tailored copy.
- Pick the compact template first, then cut content — do not shrink fonts and margins until the page is unreadable. PDF export is print-from-preview, not "pixel-perfect" marketing language.
Layout rules that protect parsers
- Single column for body text.
- Standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills).
- Real text, not text locked inside images or floating boxes.
- Avoid tables used as fake columns.
If you already built a decorative layout elsewhere, rebuild the content in a parser-safe template rather than exporting the pretty file and hoping. More on that tradeoff: Canva resume vs ATS-safe layout.
Free vs Pro when you need the compact templates
- Free: unlimited master PDF; three templates; one free application pack (lifetime) for AI-depth / apply-flow — then Pro. Building and exporting a master does not spend that pack by itself.
- Pro Monthly: all twelve templates, unlimited tailor + ATS + cover for an active search. See pricing. We do not sell packs, credits, annual, or lifetime for new purchases.
Never say "taste."
FAQ
Is a two-page resume wrong if I have 15 years?
No. Some roles need the depth. This post assumes you chose one page and need a compression plan. For the length decision itself, see how long should a resume be.
Will a one-page design with two columns "save space"?
Often it saves visual space and costs parse reliability. Prefer single-column templates from the set of twelve.
Does Wizume guarantee ATS pass rates?
No. We score keywords and formatting against the job description you paste. We do not certify Workday or any named ATS.
Resume or CV?
Same product. US default says resume. UK (en-GB) says CV.
Compress. Keep it readable. Ship the page.
